Social media has developed into a global sensation, and with new social networks popping up everywhere, it is no surprise that people all around the world continue to spend their time on these versatile platforms. No matter where you are, social media has given us the ability to connect with people and build communities around the world, surrounding all aspects of life. Although it is accessible to most countries, not every country uses social media the same way. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Snapchat, and Pinterest usage vary by country. Listed below are the social media by country statistics to help better your understanding about how social media is used worldwide.

Facebook

With a total of over 2.4 billion monthly active users, Facebook is the most popular social network worldwide. With an audience this immense, it is no surprise that much of the network’s revenue comes from advertising. As of January 2020, India is in the lead for active Facebook users, with 290 million Following is the U.S. and Indonesia tied for second with 180 million users each, and Brazil with 120 million users.

Although the U.S. holds the largest number of Instagram users, 120 million to be exact, 89% of Instagram users are actually outside of the U.S. Instagram is an app that has greatly changed over the years and evolved into what seems like a necessity to many, especially young adults. Aside from the U.S., India currently has the most Instagram users, with 80 million. Next is Brazil with 77 million users, and Indonesia with 63 million users.

Twitter

Twitter is considered to be one of the most efficient and popular ways consumers like to obtain their news. The U.S. currently has the leading number of active Twitter users with 29 million users. Next is Japan with 46 million users, and U.K. with 17 million users. Twitter has become a relevant tool in domestic and international politics. In fact, former U.S. President Barack Obama is the third most followed person on Twitter. On that note, most world leaders and foreign ministers have an official Twitter account.

LinkedIn

This professional networking site has been running since 2003. The U.S. has the highest number of users, with a total of 160 million. Following is India and China, with 62 million and 50 million users respectively. From the years of 2009 – 2019, we saw a huge increase in the number of LinkedIn user sign-ups happening globally. Currently, there is a total of 660 million LinkedIn users, spread over 200 countries.

Snapchat

The U.S. takes up a majority of Snapchat users, currently having 101 million users. Following is India with 23 million users, France with 21 million users, and U.K. with 19 million users. Snapchat has been becoming increasingly more popular, and is projected to grow immensely, surpassing 365 million global users in 2023. A total of 48% of U.S. Snapchat users post content to the app on a weekly basis. For other countries, this is not the case yet. However, it is projected to increase in popularity throughout the world.

Pinterest users are spread out a bit different than other countries previously discussed. The U.S. has the most users, at 79 million. The visual discovery engine has been used throughout the world; however, it is used a lot less in other countries versus the U.S. Germany has the second highest number of users at 13 million. Next is France and U.K. both with about 11 million users. Canada is a country that Pinterest is gaining popularity in, currently holding about 8 million users

TikTok

TikTok is the newest of the video sharing apps. Since the app was launched in September of 2016, it has exploded in popularity. TikTok has 800 million active users worldwide. In the few years the app has been active, it has already surpassed more better-known sites such as Snapchat and LinkedIn in terms of active users. India has the most active users with 466 million. Second is China with 173 million, and third is The U.S. with 123 million. The app has proved to be quite impressive, being the most downloaded app as of February 2020.

To break down the numbers of digital users around the world, there are about 7.6 billion people who exist globally, 5.1 billion mobile users, 4.4 billion internet users, 3.5 active social media users, and 3.3 mobile social media users. As we have seen, social media by country varies immensely. Most social networks start in the U.S., and then vastly expand worldwide. In almost every single country, Facebook continues to be the most popular social network by far. As we continue to evolve more into the digital era, social media will continue to be more essential in our lives.
