Each social media channel has unique user demographics. This article breaks down what audiences are most commonly found on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, Snapchat, and TikTok.
For Facebook users, people over the age of 65 are actually the fastest growing group on the network. As of now, 46% of Facebook users are over the age of 65. Fewer teens are using the network now than in the previous years. For example, in 2015, 71% of teens were active on Facebook. Now, that has dropped to 51%. Out of the high-income earners (people making above $75,000), 74% of them are Facebook users. Also, 74% of Facebook users have a college degree. As of 2020, India has the highest number of users, with a total of 269 million. Next is the United States with 183 million and Indonesia with 123 million users. Currently, 75% of females use the Facebook, and 63% of males.
Users between the ages of 18 and 24 are currently the largest of the demographics. 56.3% of Instagram users are female, and 43.7% are male. As far as geography, the U.S. holds the highest number of users, at 116 million. The second highest is India, with 80 million users, and Brazil with 77 million users. More than 70% of LinkedIn users are from outside of the U.S., consequently, after the U.S., India has the highest number of LinkedIn users, at 64 million users, and China with 49 million users. There are currently 46 million students and recent college graduates on LinkedIn. As for gender, 43% of the users are female, and 57% are male. The average income of a LinkedIn user currently stands at $46,644 per year. 90 million LinkedIn users are senior-level influencers, and 63 million of them are in decision making positions.
There is a total of 262 million international Twitter users, which make up 79% of all twitter accounts. The U.S. accounts for 31 million daily active Twitter users. Within the international basis, 66% are male, while only 34% are female. 44% of people aged 18-24 use Twitter. On the other hand, only about 7% of people aged 65+ use the network. About 56% of Twitter users earn $50,000 or more per year. The top three countries carrying Twitter users outside the U.S. are Japan, with 35.65 users, Russia, with 13.9 million users, and U.K., with 13.7 users. Only 13% of people with a high school education or less use Twitter, and 32% with a college degree use the app. With this said, 20% of those making less than $30,000 annually use Twitter, and 31% of those making more than $75,000 use the site.
Out of all other social networks, Pinterest has the highest number of female users, currently at 71%. With this said, 80% of U.S. mothers who use the internet use Pinterest. The median age of a Pinterest user is 40. Over 50% of the total number of users live outside of the U.S. Half of the Pinterest users earn $50,000 or more per year, with 10% of the total users making more than $125,000 per year. 28% of marketers use Pinterest. 19% of people with a high school education or less use Pinterest, and 38% of those with more than a college education use the network. With all of this said, 28% of all U.S. social media users are Pinterest users.
78% of all internet users aged between 18 and 24 currently use Snapchat. With that said, 90% of Snapchat users are 13-24 years old. Only about 3% of the app’s users are 65+. 70% of Snapchat users are female. The majority of Snapchat users are in the U.S., which currently stands at 97.55 million users. Second is France has 20.4 million users and India is at 18.8 million users. The U.S. regional breakdown is almost equal throughout the country, with 29% of those living in an urban area using the app, 20% of people living in suburban area, and 20% of people living in a rural area use Snapchat. As far as the income of Snapchat users, 27% of those making less than $30,000 use Snapchat, and 22% of those making more than $75,000 use the app.
41% of TikTok users are aged between 16 and 24. Approximately 56% of all TikTok users are male, and 44% female, with a little over half of the them being iPhone users. The app is tremendously diverse. With currently 800 million monthly active users, only 26.5 million monthly users are form the U.S. Chinese users account for about 80% of the total time spent using the app, and 43% of all users are from India. The app is also available in 150 markets, in 75 different languages. The majority of TikTok users are aged particularly young, however, the adult user demographic is growing. In less than 18 months, the number of U.S. adults using the app grew 5.5 times. Only about 4% of U.S. social media marketers use the platform, but strategic social media agencies are ahead of the curve.
