TikTok in 2020: Stats, Engagement, Future

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted all social media platforms in a number of ways. People at home were starved of social interaction, so they turned to the internet to find some sort of connection. The app that society turned to the most was TikTok. TikTok is one of the largest video-sharing platforms in the world and was known to be a very engaging and rapidly growing network even before the pandemic. Its tailored “for you pages” for each user and the short-length videos have drawn people in. With people across the globe stuck at home with more free time, TikTok became the place to connect and share content. Here are some TikTok statistics from 2020.

Users

By the summer of 2020, TikTok had 689 million active users with 65.9 million of them being in the United States.

69% of active users are aged 10-29, making Gen-Z and young millennials the most prominent age group using the platform.

The average user spent about 858 minutes per month on TikTok in 2020, which makes that about 46 minutes per day. With each video being about 1 minute long, it is assumed that a user is exposed to 40+ different types of content each day. You can also compare these metrics to the average usage per month in October 2019, 442.9 mins/month, and December 2019, 561.2 mins/month. Viewership was already on the rise pre-pandemic, so as everyone began to have more free time in 2020, it was inevitable that these figures would rise.

Downloads

In Q1 of 2020, right as the pandemic began to shut the world down, TikTok gained 315 million downloads, which was the highest number of downloads the app has seen in any given quarter.

TikTok was the most downloaded app, globally, of 2020.

Engagement and Reach

TikTok leads all other social networking sites in engagement (within the U.S.) with an 18% engagement rate. You can compare this to Instagram’s 3.86% and Youtube’s 1.63%. This statistic is quite astounding considering that Instagram and YouTube have been around for much longer than TikTok has.

90% of users open the app every day, giving creators an ample amount of exposure on any given day. This also shows how engaged an average TikTok user is, which is important for anyone who is trying to reach a lot of people.

TikTok is available in over 150 countries which gives anyone who produces content a wide range of people to connect with.

Revenue

In 2020, TikTok made $1 billion in revenue through advertisements, in-app purchases, and other sources.

Future use

These TikTok statistics prove that this platform is here to stay with substantial growth in users, engagement, and revenue. In fact, it was still one of the most downloaded apps in January 2021 with 62 million installs, making it the second-most downloaded application in the world. Consumers favor short-length content and with the app’s ability to appeal to a wide range of people, it is expected that TikTok will continue to be a prominent platform for everyone to use. Businesses, in particular, will benefit from using TikTok as the app can be used to reach a lot of people in a very short amount of time.
