We started in Hopewell Junction and ended at a park right outside of Brewster. Your reward is that the other end of the trail as you ride east is a very nice section past East Branch Reservoir, including a long section right along the water. wow! Southeast Town Park (192-198 Pumphouse Rd, Brewster) on Tonetta Lake acts as the Brewster Trailhead. Picking a favorite section is a really hard call, they both have their pluses. Most of what remains is only the brick structure housing the mechanics for a trolley to the summit. Be aware that there are at least 2 additional parking areas/access points where the trail crosses RT 292 in Holmes (Whalay Lake - Holmes Community Center) and where it crosses Old Rt 55. Parking for Holmes access is at the Community Center on 292 (not the apartment building on the corner) unless you want to get towed, they aren't very nice about it but can't really blame them. It is very flat for the most part. I did the 3 trails which combine to 18 miles in each direction. Pedestrians are great, with only bikes there is a lot less stress about passing. More than anything, Im drawn to the tiny, out-of-the-way hamlets strung out along these bike paths. All in all, a really nice trail, good variety of sections and sights. Turn right onto NY 9G, which becomes Washington St., for 0.6 mile. About 65 minutes to the turn around point, very leisurely done but flew back to Hopewell Junction at 17 mph and 40 minutes. And decent parking. The only problem was that it incorrectly listed a particular parking lot and sent me on a wild goose chase for a non existent parking lot. THERE ARE VARIOUS STREET CROSSINGS WITH GREAT SIGNAGE AS TO MILEAGE AND TRAIL INFO.I CHANGED TO 1.25 TIRES ON MY MT. The last stretch, the Hudson Valley trail, isn't as well paved, but it's pretty short and still nice to ride. It's wide, clean and well paved. But I love this about this route: It joins towns youd probably never think of visiting. No doubt in my mind whether or not its open. Trail also passes the somewhat harrowing sight of Greenhaven prison briefly and also an area for NYPD canine training with big fences. This section ends at a trailhead parking area in Hopewell Junction, several hundred yards west of Route 82, which includes a railroad depot museum and public restrooms. The trail is mostly wooded and there is not much to see as far as scenery but if you looking for a level smooth place to ride, this trail is a great choice. From there the bike trail is quite good for a while, but then you have to bike on the road. It is nicely paved all the way to HJ with mileage markers with "HJ" indicating distance to Hopewell Junction. I also love walking In Mathews park although that is more of a city trail to me not as much nature as these are concrete paved and you pass near traffic and such. I just want to thank Mr Steinhaus for his great for his great work in making this trail a reality. being an old RR grade, the slope is not perceptible, except at certain road crossings where a RR bridge used to be. There are several lovely watery areas on this trail and it is a great place for bird watchers. I RODE PART OF THIS TRAIL LAST YEAR FROM THE WALKWAY OVER THE HUDSON. But it continues a few miles east into Connecticut. More of us should take the time when seeing these people doing work to keep this trail. The bike trail sign is painted on the road, but you have to look for it. Permit requires a fee and submission of required insurance. Once the section is paved over the railroad bridge over RT 6/202 it will be a straight run, no stairs. I did this from south to north with two other trials. From Hopewell, It continued to Poughkeepsie. All in all, a great new trail and in Fall this is going to be spectacular. The trail surface is paved asphalt and smooth. Together, the three rail-trails were welcomed into Rails-to-Trails Conservancys Rail-Trail Hall of Fame in 2016 and offer a seamless, combined route of just over 20 miles. Either someone was reading the plans upside down, or there will be a very unusual L shaped RT pedestrian bridge at this crossing. Now that most of the snow has melted I ventured East from Greenhaven up Depot Hill by bike. There are some interesting historical artifacts and very clean restrooms. Road this entire trail this past week as an out-and-back from Brewster. The second time I started riding in Brewster, near the end of the Putnam Valley trail. The walkway over Hudson and Hudson valley rail trial that finishes in Tony Williams park. This is a very nice paved trial so if you have a race bike some good training here. Todays one way mileage for that section was also about 5 miles; a great ride, and you can ride much farther (we often go as far as Whalley Lake, just not today) as the trail goes all the way to Hopewell Junction where you can pick up the Dutchess Rail Trail. It is excellent how the trail links up with the walkway-over-the Hudson (which was simply an abandoned hulk when I lived there!) The trail is well maintained and wide enough for multiple use. Most oddly, I had noted on the south side the new grade was offset from the grade on the north side. The unfortunate part is that over the last year the trail has become nothing more than a place to honor dead loved ones and promote businesses. It is finely crushed gravel which is an up grease from mud; however check your bike company to make sure your tires are appropriate for this type of gravel To reach this parking lot from I-84, take Exit 46, and head north on US 9. At Hopewell Junction, it provides a seamless link to the William R. Steinhaus Dutchess Rail Trail , and onward to the Walkway over the Hudson State Par k and the Hudson Valley Rail Trail in Ulster County. In Pawling, just north of Whaley Lake, the trailway intersects with the Appalachian Trail. The second section we rode, going North from the Brewster trailhead at Lake Tonetta, offers views of the ice pond and the great swamp, with hills in the distance. I noticed that a few of the bridges are a couple of inches higher than the trail surface, and I'm not saying a little bump, I'm saying stop and walk it or fall off your bike bumps.
