An all-star athlete, Rick was actively recruited for football by several colleges when he suffered a career ending back injury.

As hopes of a college athletic career faded, Rick turned his passion for athletics to teaching and coaching, attending Kansas State Teachers College where he earned his bachelor degree in physical education, followed by a master's degree in physical education from the University of Rhode Island.
